Creatine Information

Creatine Monohydrate is the best selling sports supplement of all time. The question is - does it work?

In order to answer this question you really must come up with a better definition of "working". If you take creatine and sit on your butt all day - does it work? No! However, if you take creatine and workout - does it work? Yes.

Okay - so how does creatine increase muscle size?

Here is a quick science lesson:

Creatine (scientifically known as Creatine Monohydrate) is a naturally occurring substance that exists in every muscle of your body. Whenever you use your muscles, a chemical (adenosine tri-phosphate - ATP) is broken down into two simpler chemicals (adenosine di-phosphate - ADP and inorganic phosphate). This process of ATP turning into ADP releases the energy which gives your muscles power. The problem is that your muscles only contain enough adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) to last about 10-15 seconds at maximum exertion. The ADP can not be used to create more energy for your muscles. However, with the help of Creatine and phosphates - the ADP can be converted back into the very useful ATP.

Creatine Monohydrate combines with abundant phosphorus stores in the muscles and is converted into Creatine Phosphate. The Creatine-Phosphate is then able to restore the adenosine di-phosphate (ADP) into adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), by giving up a phosphate molecule. Now instead of just ADP, your body has more ATP. More ATP in your body means more fuel for your muscles. This allows you to keep pumping.

Unfortunately your muscle's Creatine supply is not limitless. The average human muscle contains between 3.5 and 4 grams of Creatine per kilogram of muscle. Once the Creatine is used up, so are you. You then have to rest your muscles and wait a while before your next set of repetitions. The good news is that your body can store up to 5 grams of Creatine per kilogram. In other words, if you are not taking creatine supplements to get the full 5 grams of creatine in your muscles - up to 30% of your body's Creatine capacity is not being used. It is no coincidence that studies have found bodybuilders to display an increase of up to 30% in their repetitions after only one week of using Creatine supplements.

END OF SCIENCE LESSON

So, by supplementing your body with creatine you can increase the energy available to your muscles. More energy means you can work out longer and harder - and this means bigger muscles.

What about other Sports Supplements?

There are many other sports supplements on the market that may be of benefit to bodybuilders or athletes. Here are few which we believe offer the greatest benefits:

Protein Powder:

You can't make muscles without protein. So, no matter how much you workout or how much creatine you take - if you don't have enough protein in your diet you will have a hard time putting on muscle mass. If you don't get protein in your diet - you can take a protein supplement.

Human Growth Hormone (HGH):

As we age our body produces less and less HGH or human growth hormone. The less HGH in our body the harder it is to put on muscle mass and convert body fat to muscle mass. Taking a supplement to increase HGH may be an effective way to increase muscle mass while decreasing body fat. Beware - there are a lot of bogus HGH products on the market!

Chromium Picolinate:

If you are looking to loss some body fat - chromium picolinate can be very effective. It basically works by making your insulin more effective in its role of transporting sugar out of the bloodstream. If you don't remove sugar from your bloodstream you end up storing it as fat. This is really an over simplified version of the story.
